Freight class changes in 2025
As a reminder, the NMFTA is rolling out big updates to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) this year. You can read more directly from the NMFTA.
Saturday, July 19
- A new 13-tier density-to-class scale replaces the previous model
- "Fixed" classes are being replaced with weight/volume-driven assignments for the majority of commodities
- Over 2,000 NMFC item numbers have been canceled, merged or restructured
- Unique identifiers will now denote freight that carriers liability issues or needs special handling or stowability consideration
Quote Factory's built-in class estimator will be updated on July 19 to match the new scale. Remember that this is only a density-based estimate, and you should determine the actual class by getting it from your customer or looking it up on ClassIT+ (subscription required).
Thursday, August 28
- Additional NMFC item numbers will be removed, merged or restructured
- More commodities will shift fully to the new 13-tier density scale
- Classes 50 and 55 will remain available for very dense shipments, while lighter items may move up to higher classes
- Additional special-handling, storability and liability flags may be introduced to cover more unique freight types
ClassIT+
The NMFTA's new ClassIT+ rolled out on July 15. The legacy ClassIT will not be getting the 2025 updates. We encourage every broker that ships LTL to consider subscribing so they can make sure they're looking at the latest classification.
Address book
Keep in mind that the address book looks at your shipment history, so if you pick a commodity you've shipped before, it may have an old freight class. Whenever the class in the field doesn't match the estimator, we show the estimate below. Use this as a signal to confirm you have the right class.
Remember that this is only a density-based estimate, and you should determine the actual class by getting it from your customer or looking it up on ClassIT+ (subscription required).
