What happens when I mark my shipment "protect from freezing"?
If you have LTL cargo that needs protection from freezing in the colder months, you can select the "protect from freezing" accessorial when running your LTL quote. This will (ideally at least) give the carrier a heads up that temp-sensitive freight is being picked up so that they can have any needed materials (such as insulated blankets) on hand.
Here's how this works in Quote Factory:
1. When we retrieve quotes from carriers, we will only return results for carriers who offer protect from freezing service.
2. When we dispatch the shipment to the carrier, we tell them again that the shipment needs to be protected from freezing so that they are aware.
3. Your BOL will also indicate that the shipment needs to be protected from freezing, so when the driver picks it up he will be made aware yet again that it needs to be protected. On the chance that both items 1 and 2 have failed to prepare the carrier, this will at least let the driver know to take extra care when he gets back to the terminal.
A good practice is also to contact the carrier after you've booked your shipment to make sure they are aware of your requirements. This would also be a good opportunity to ask any questions about how the particular carrier handles their freeze protection, should you have any.
